9 Days: Montreux, Gruyeres, Gstaad, Lake Thun, Lucerne.
Discover the beauty and wonderful contrasts of Switzerland on a relaxed cycling holiday that follows the famous Golden Pass railway line. Travel through blissful Alpine pastures and pretty villages with magnificent views of many lakes and mountains.
Day 1 – Arrival Switzerland
Arrival at Swiss airport and transfer by rail to Montreux. Afternoon at leisure. Enjoy this famous lakeside town on the shores of Lake Geneva. Overnight at your hotel in Montreux/Vevey.
Day 2 – Montreux/Vevey, Gruyeres / Charmey
Breakfast at the hotel. From Montreux cycle to neighbouring Vevey to take the rack railway up to Mont-Pelerin thus avoiding a steep ascent. Tranquil roads lead from here to the region that produces the famous Gruyere cheese. Overnight in Charmey. (B)
Day 3 – Charmey, Gstaad
Breakfast at the hotel. Your ride through Saanenland will be accompanied by the sound of cowbells, as the area is dominated by the milk and cheese trade. Narrow roads lead through an authentic and typical Swiss region with fantastic views towards the high peaks of the Alps. Overnight Gstaad / Saanen. (B)
Day 4 – Gstaad, Lake Thun
Breakfast at the hotel. You will always have the option of taking the train today as the famous Golden Pass train line more or less follows the same route. Riding through the Simmental with its artfully decorated wooden houses will leave you with impressions of a picture postcard region. Take the boat from Spiez to Interlaken. Overnight in Interlaken. (B)
Day 5 – Lake Thun, At Leisure
Breakfast at the hotel. Some leisure time to explore this picturesque region. Enjoy a leisurely cruise on the lake, visit famous peaks such as the Jungfraujoch or Schilthorn. Or chose one of the many signposted hiking trails the region is so famous for. Overnight in Interlaken. (B)
Day 6 – Lake Thun, Lake Sarnen
Breakfast at the hotel. From here follow the southern shores of Lake Brienz. There are some steep climbs en route. If time allows enjoy a stop in Meiringen famous for its Sherlock Holmes Museum, the Reichenbach falls and its meringue. From here take the train to avoid the steepest climb over the Brünig pass. Overnight in Sachseln. (B)
Day 7 – Lake Sarnen, Lucerne
Breakfast at the hotel. Follow the shores of Lake Sarnen towards Mount Pilatus, Lucerne’s house mountain. At its foot you will have reached the shores of Lake Lucerne and can cycle along its shore, bay after bay, towards Lucerne. Overnight in Lucerne. (B)
Day 8 – Lucerne, At Leisure
Breakfast at the hotel. Mountain excursions, lake cruises, city tours, museum visits – there is a multitude of activities available in this popular lakeside resort. Overnight in Lucerne. (B)
Day 9 – Departure
Breakfast at the hotel. Rail transfer to airport and return journey home. (B)
