No other trip provides such an array of day-to-day activities to satisfy every member of a mixed group, be you an inquisitive young child, an energetic parent or a grandparent wanting a little more relaxation.
This safari is ideal for families with young children, but also a great safari for couples or a group of friends.
Day 1 – Nairobi
Upon an early morning arrival into Nairobi you will be met and transferred to the Ol Sereni Hotel. This afternoon you will be collected from the hotel for an “Out of Africa” experience. Follow in the footsteps of Karen Blixen as you travel towards the Ngong Hills, you will feel swept immediately onto the film set of Out of Africa the moment you arrive. The old colonial farmhouse is simple, housing a few items that Karen Blixen chose and once enjoyed herself. There are also the colorful gardens to explore, where several old coffee machines have laid untouched for decades. From here visit the Giraffe Center, where the highly endangered Rothschild giraffe can be admired. With an elevated viewing-cum-feeding platform, this tour is wonderful for children.
Overnight Ol Sereni Hotel, Club Room.
Day 2 – Nairobi / Samburu National Reserve
Morning departure for the Samburu National Reserve. You’ll pass near Thika and continue north through some breathtaking scenery dotted with rushing mountain streams and fields of tea and coffee. After Nanyuki town, we eventually reach a dusty outpost known as Isiolo, the last major stop on the journey into the remote northern frontier district. From here it’s a short hop to Samburu. Arrive at the camp in time for lunch before departing for an afternoon game drive returning to the camp as the sun sets.
Overnight at Samburu Intrepids. (BLD)
Perched on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro River in the heart of Samburu National reserve, Samburu Intrepids enjoys a unique perspective of one of Africa’s most celebrated wildernesses. The camp’s location deep inside the reserve guarantees close encounters with the region’s shier wildlife, including elephant, lion, leopard, and Samburu’s famous ‘unique five’ – the rare reticulated giraffe, long-necked gerenuk antelope, Somali ostrich, Grevy’s zebra, and majestic Beisa Oryx. This luxurious tented lodge offers 27 modern tents with a private view over the wildlife-rich riverbanks. The spacious tents boast the very latest in luxury camping, with soft four-poster beds, handsome mahogany closets and writing desks, and en suite bathrooms with steaming hot showers. The bathrooms also offer twin washbasins, flush toilets, and sockets for shavers and battery charging. Because of the warm climate, Samburu Intrepids’ public areas are all palm-thatched and open to the elements, raised on stilts to catch the cooling breeze blowing off the river. The main dining room opens onto an outdoor dining terrace, where buffet breakfasts and lunches are served overlooking the river.

After lunch, enjoy a boat ride on Lake Naivasha, returning to the lodge for dinner. Overnight at Great Rift Valley lodge. (BLD)
Great Rift Valley Lodge
A short drive from the well-maintained Pan African Highway is the Great Rift Valley Lodge & Golf Resort Its location midway between the Samburu and Maasai Mara reserves makes the lodge the perfect stopover between the country’s top safari destinations – and an ideal alternative to a night in a city hotel. The Great Rift Valley Lodge sits at about 7,000 feet, from which elevation it enjoys magnificent views to the west and east. The vistas stretch from the shimmering waters of Lake Naivasha to the jagged volcanic crater of Mount Longonot and, beyond, the sloping shoulders of the Aberdare Mountains – Kenya’s most important watershed. The Great Rift Valley Lodge offers 21 twin and 9 double rooms, all with private balconies overlooking the spectacular valley floor with large four-poster beds, handmade wooden furniture, African prints, and modern en suite bathrooms.
