Vientiane
Vientiane is the capital and largest city of Laos. It is located on the Mekong River close to the border with Thailand. Vientiane is filled with rich history. Visitors will marvel at the French colonial buildings on tree lined mixed in with Buddhist temples. The national symbol of Laos is the That Luang, a gilded stupa. Other temples include the Wat Si Sasket, with thousands of Buddha images, Wat Si Muang, built over a Hindhu shrine, and Haw Phra Kaew, the former home of the Emerald Buddha. Visit Buddha Park, just outside of the city, a beautiful park with over 200 Buddhist and Hindu sculptures. Vientiane has a small town feel. After the sightseeing is complete, why not wander to the riverside to relax.
Luang Prabang
Luang Prabang, the ancient capital of Laos, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Known as the “Jewel in the Laos Crown”, Luang Prabang has preserved its architectural, religious, and cultural heritage. The city consists of four main roads and is located on a peninsula between the Nam Khan and Mekong River. Luang Prabang has numerous Buddhist temples and monuments including the Wat Xieng Thong, built in the 16th century, and Wat Mai, where the head of Laotian Buddhism once lived. The old town is a perfect place to walk around, relax and enjoy the stunning river views and the Royal Palace. Luang Prabang is one of the best places in Laos to witness the alms giving ceremony, which is a longstanding tradition in Laos Buddhist culture. Leave town and you can explore the surrounding natural beauty. There are hiking trails that will take you to gorgeous waterfalls and limestone caves.
